Work Zone Safety

Work Zone Awareness Week

Every spring, National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) is held to bring national attention to motorist and worker safety, and mobility issues in work zones. Since 1999, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has worked with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) to coordinate this observance.

MDOT joins FHWA, AASHTO, ATSSA and other state departments of transportation across the country to recognize April 15-19, 2024 as NWZAW.

With over 80% of work zone casualties being either driver or vehicle passengers, MDOT urges drivers to be attentive to changing roadway conditions and exercise extreme caution while driving through work zones, keeping their safety as well as the safety of road workers in mind.
